Is It Clutter or Is It Hoarding

There is an increase in interest in hoarding, or more precisely Hoarding Disorder which is defined by the Mayo Clinicas: “a persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions because of a perceived need to save them. A person with Hoarding Disorder experience distress at the thought of getting rid of the items. Excessive accumulation of items, regardless of actual value, occurs.” (2018).

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America: “Hoarding is the compulsive purchasing, acquiring, and saving of items that have little or no value.  The behavior usually has deleterious effects - emotional, physical, social, financial, and even legal - for a hoarder and family members” (2015).

There have been several television shows that portray people with Hoarding Disorder, in their home environment.  These cases leave the non-hoarder gawking in disbelief.

The person who lives with clutter, can look at a hoard situation and breathe a sigh, and think ‘Well, at least I am not that bad.’

The fundamental difference between a Clutterbug and a Hoarder, is that a Clutterbug can be made to see the importance of releasing things, letting them go, and or discarding them, while the Hoarder, as in the above definition, will struggle to let anything go, and will often need psychological intervention to create insight into their condition. Hoarders have difficulty making rational decisions about what is useful.  Anyone who works with a Hoarder will have to be extremely patient.
