Human history is deeply tied to the small, unseen world of microbes. Long before cities, kings, or books, bacteria and viruses were already here, evolving in oceans, soils, and animal bodies. They survive by finding hosts and moving between them. We survive by defending ourselves and adapting. This shared story is not just about disease. It is about coevolution, where both sides change over time. When we changed how we lived—by farming, keeping animals, building towns, and traveling far—microbes found new ways to spread. This chapter explains how those early choices shaped the stage on which pandemics later unfolded.

Microbes and us

Microbes are everywhere. Many of them are harmless and even helpful. They help digest food, enrich soil, and keep wider ecosystems in balance. But some are pathogens. They cause illness when they enter the human body and overcome our defenses. The line between harmless and harmful is not fixed. Microbes evolve quickly. A small change in a virus can make it contagious. A small change in a bacterium can make it resistant to a drug or better at surviving in air or water. Our bodies also adapt. Over generations, human immune systems learn. But unlike microbes, humans do not evolve in a single lifetime. This difference often gives microbes the first move.
